Soulful and Deep House Mix |
Podcast SummaryMusic is something that makes you feel alive, free, joyous. It puts a smile on your face. Makes your body move in ways you never thought possible. House music is all this and alot more. About DJ Tommy RiosIt all started for me back towards the end of the Disco era. At a time when House music was called Club music. My cousins and I sneaked into a party in a basement because we were to young to hang out with the older cousins and young adults. The DJ that was playing that night was actually my older cousin DJ Mike Rivera from Newark New Jersey. I loved the way my cousin was controlling the crowd with every song he played, the loud music, the vibe everything about that night was really awesome to me. After that night I decided that I wanted to be a DJ. I tried to listen to my cousin play every chance I had. I started off with a single tape deck and a no pitch turntable. Then my father saw the passion and fun I was having and decided to purchase some of my cousins older equipment and two no pitch turntables. I made due with what I had and started to collect music and practiced everyday after school. I also tried to dupicate the mixes I heard on the radio by WKTU DJ's like "The Animal", "The Latin Rascals", Shep Pettibone", WBLS DJ "Tony Humphries", "Louie Vega" and many others. Shortly after I started I met a DJ which was a sibling of one of my friends from my neighborhood. His name is Louie Lou Gorbea. He invited me into his room to talk about music and to listen to some of the new music he just got from the record pool (IDRC) he was a member of. I was very impressed with the HUGE record collection and the cool equipment he had. He gave me a record as a gift and I still have it today. After a couple of years of practicing a friend of mine suggested that we try our hands at Mobile DJing. We did a few gigs together with the help of another DJ Eddie Santana. Together we played small parties here and there. Soon after I got married (1991) I stopped playing and sold all of my DJ equpiment. It wasn't until my wife and I came into some money (around 2004) that I decided to buy equipment again and just do it as a hobby and maybe play music at some family parties. Then in 2008 I ran into Louie Lou Gorbea again spinning on the boardwalk in Coney Island with fellow DJ Ray Vasquez. After speaking to him awhile, attending several of his gigs, meeting a lot of his friends Rene Hewitt, Duce Martinez, Tony Lebron, DJ FM, Louie Vega, I decided to return to DJing but also adding in music production. With Louie's help and encourgement, I now have a podcast page, played live on prepartyradio.com as a guest DJ with DJ Michael Menton, Tony Lebron and Louie Gorbea. Currently I have a internet show every Sunday at 1pm on only1fm.com called "House Grooves". With some hard work and persistence I will make my mark in the music industry.
